What the cost leaves out

The cost counts the job alone, as SMG Tools counts a job: the time, the materials and what you paid others for it, and no share of your truck, your insurance or your office. The margin is what has to pay for those, and for the business's own profit, so a margin that looks healthy here still has those to cover.

Your own hours are on a line of their own because they are the cost most often left out. Leave them out and every job looks profitable; count them at what you would pay somebody else, and the profit is what the business made on top of paying you.

Every job, as it runs, in SMG Tools

SMG Tools works this out for every job without anybody typing it in: the crew's hours from their time, the materials from the receipts and parts on the job, against what the job was paid, the same way as here. It ranks every kind of work you do by what it made — which kinds of work make money — and says what to charge to make your target margin.
