The phone app

SMG Tools for iPhone and Android — where to get it, signing in, the camera and the label scanner, files, and what stays on the website.

Every plan Getting started

SMG Tools is in the App Store and on Google Play. It is the same SMG Tools you sign in to on the web — the same account, the same pages, the same records — with what a phone adds: an icon on your home screen, the camera, a label scanner, your phone’s own sign-in, and files that go where you choose.

Get the app

It is free to download on every plan, Starter included, for the office and the crew alike. There is nothing to set up for your business: anyone on your team installs it and signs in.

Sign in as you do on the web: your email and password, then the code we send. Sign in with Google, Sign in with Microsoft and Sign in with Apple open your phone’s own sign-in sheet and bring you back to the app signed in. A passkey you made on the web signs you in on your phone, and one you make on your phone signs you in on the web.

Once you have signed in, the app remembers your phone, so you are not asked for a code each time you open it. Your phone is listed with your other devices on your Security page, where you can sign it out.

What your crew sees

A field member opens on My Day, as they do in a browser: the day’s visits, Directions, Call, the clock, and the three taps that tell the office what happened — see The crew’s phone. If the signal drops, the day they last opened is kept on the phone and opens without it (Open your day with no signal).

Photos, labels and files

  • The camera takes job photos, receipts and a unit’s nameplate straight from the page you are on.
  • Scan reads an equipment label’s QR code with the phone’s own scanner.
  • A file — an invoice’s PDF, a label sheet, a report — opens your phone’s share sheet, so you save it, print it, or send it where you choose.

A link in an email from SMG Tools that opens your account — a mention, a reply, an invitation, a password reset — opens the app on a phone that has it. Links your clients receive (a proposal, an invoice, their own page) always open in the browser, because your clients do not have the app.

Updates

The app keeps itself current. Most changes arrive on their own when you open it, and take effect the next time you do; the rest come as an ordinary update from the App Store or Google Play. When one has downloaded, a banner at the top says An update is ready: tap Restart now to use it straight away, or close the banner and it starts the next time you open the app. Profile → Support shows which version you are on.

What stays on the website

Your plan. Choosing a plan, changing it and paying for it happen at smgtools.com, not in the app — Apple does not allow a subscription to be sold inside an iPhone app any other way, so neither app shows plan prompts or a billing page. Everything else is in the app.

Notifications. The app does not send notifications yet; email still tells you what needs you, and SMG Tools in a browser can show them (Notifications on your phone).

Your privacy

The app keeps nothing of its own beyond the token that remembers your signed-in phone, carries no analytics, and never reads your contacts, your calendar or your texts. It asks for the camera, the microphone (for the assistant), adding to your photos (for a file you save), and your location only while you use it and only where your business has turned on arrival location. The Privacy Policy says more.
